Starring Yoshida's wife and frequent collaborator, Okada Mariko, Flames of Love is a bold tale of sexual repression and awakening. Beautiful Oriko (Okada) is a dutiful housewife, but her salaryman husband Takashi (Sugano) prefers the company of his mistress. Life might have continued this way, but the exploits of Yuka, Takashi's pleasure-seeking younger sister, stir up Oriko's own desires for something more. A chance meeting with her late mother's lover, fans the flames, but this is no typical affair. An adaptation of the novel White Poppy, this boundary-pushing film explores female sexuality in a changing Japan.
