At the bitter end of WWII, Shusaku (Nagato), a sickly college student, arrives at the remote mountain hot springs of Akitsu. There he meets Shinko (Okada), the inkeeper's daughter who changes his life forever. After she nurses him to health, they begin an unusual affair that will last 17 years, picked up afresh each time Shusaku returns. Over time, he marries another woman and gradually loses the passion of his youth, but is repeatedly drawn back to the fiery Shinko. Directed by trailblazing auteur Yoshida Yoshishige, this classic of early New Wave evokes a haunted love reminiscent of Brokeback Mountain, but is utterly tied to the broken dreams and lost idealism of post-war Japan. This brand-new color print will make its premiere in Hong Kong.
