Set in Shitamachi, the old neighborhood of pre-war Tokyo that Gosho observed so well, Woman of the Mist concerns an aging couple who run a small laundry business. Though childless themselves, Bunkichi and his wife Okiyo have always treated their irresponsible nephew Seiichi (son of Bunkichi's widowed sister) like their own child. When Seiichi's  careless romance has serious consequences, Bunkichi must prove himself a worthy father figure. Gosho's realist moral drama captures the frailty and ultimate worth of all his characters. As critics Joseph Anderson once said, "he seems to set his cameras rolling on life itself".
