A bi-lingual study of the filmmaker with interviews and essays will also be published and complimentary copies will be offered to all participants.
Chan attracted attention with the first film he directed, Alan & Eric: Between Hello and Goodbye in 1991before forming the United Filmmakers Organization (UFO) Ltd. There he produced popular films like Tom, Dick & Hairy and He's A Woman, She's A Man. In 1996, he was awarded the Best Director in the Hong Kong Film Awards with Comrades, Almost A Love Story. In 1997, he made his first US film, The Love Letter. Forming Applause Pictures in 2000, Chan produced a series of acclaimed Asian films, including Jan Dara, One Fine Spring Day, The Eye and Three: Going Home. He has been twice awarded the Best Director in the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival with Perhaps Love and The Warlords in recent years.
Chan draws his inspiration from changing social circumstances. During the dark period of SARS in 2003, Chan worked with other local directors to produce 1:99 Celluloid to encourage Hong Kong society in face of the epidemic. His great passion for Hong Kong was also shown in Golden Chicken and McDull the Alumni which he produced. In 2005, Chan developed his career in Mainland Chinawith Perhaps Love. The ensuing Warlords, Protégé, Bodyguards and Assassins and Wu Xia further strengthened his presence in the China market.
“Peter Ho-Sun Chan is a talented Hong Kong filmmaker with achievements in different aspects like producing, directing and marketing. He is also successful in the mainland market. The HKIFF is pleased to pay a tribute to him by exploring his illustrious career, which will be inspiring and stimulating for young people,” said Li Cheuk-to, Artistic Director of HKIFF.
