There's a monster living in Seoul's Han River. When it steals Hyeon-Seo, the youngest member of snack-bar merchant Park Heui-Bong's family, he, his sons – Hyeon-Seo's father, the dull-witted Gang-Du and slacker Nam-Il – and archer daughter Nam-Ju go on a mission to get her back – despite an elaborate and secretive military action to get the beast. Director Bong Joon-Ho plays with genre conventions much as he did with his critical and box office hit Memories of Murder , mixing slapstick comedy, gruesome horror, and a touch of politics into a work of pure genre entertainment that never loses sight of the characters at the centre of the story. A cult classic in the making.
