Inspired by the Fritz Lang classic and based upon the comic by the late Tezuka Osamu ( Astroboy ), Rintaro has dreamed up a wildly imaginative and visually spectacular allegory. Even revered critic Roger Ebert went berserk over the film, calling it ˇ§one of the best animated films I have ever seenˇ¨. Coupling the nightmarish Orwellian totalitarianism with a roaring 20's swing soundtrack, this is a rare work that lends itself to both gritty futurism and heady nostalgia, all at the same time. The finale itself is worthy of Stanley Kubrick, depicting the cataclysm by way of the wistful sounds of Ray Charles' ˇ§I Can't Stop Loving Youˇ¨. Dr. Strangelove would be proud. |
