Giving birth out of wedlock is a nightmare for Sofia – a disgrace to her bourgeois family that threatens imprisonment for her and her baby’s father. Despite being seemingly trapped, Sofia calculatedly manipulates the situation to her own ends, achieving a triumph of woman’s power, albeit a bleak one. First-time writer-director Benm’barek’s nuanced script aims at more than criticizing the class hypocrisy and arcane laws within Moroccan society. Winner of the Best Screenplay in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard section.
