We could be walking toward any attraction. Then we see ARBEIT MACHT FREI and enter the world of concentration camp tourism. Where pain, memory and empathy become commoditized, what remains? Sergei Loznitsa (The Event, 40th) offers languid B&W candid takes of tourists, guides and interpreters amongst the grim landscapes of conscience. Amid selfies, evasive interpretations, and deeply edited pasts, the Ukrainian director forces us to find meanings for ourselves in both these powerful sites and the detachment with which they can be visited.
