Michael Dudok de Wit
France, Belgium, Japan / 2016 / 82 minutes / DCP
The first international co-production from Studio Ghibli enlists the talent of Oscar-winning Dutch animator Dudok de Wit for a gorgeously animated fable about human and nature. At every attempt to leave, a lonely man on a deserted island is thwarted by an enormous sea turtle. He meets a woman, and his life takes changes. Miyazaki Hayao’s signature surreal touches and carefully dosed humor, combined with the director’s minimalist emotional impact, make this quiet and compassionate animation a touching ode.
