A controlling husband forbids his wife – a school teacher – from attending a wedding in the north of Iran with their daughter. The gesture sets the couple on an irrevocable collision course towards confrontation and tragedy. Farnoosh Samadi’s feature debut – the first in her upcoming “Secrets and Lies” trilogy – is a shining example of Iranian social realism, deftly analysing the plight, and impasse, of women (whether mothers, wives, educators or hopeful young students) in a rigid, rule-bound patriarchal society. Screening with Hidden (2020, 18min).
