A gothic family thriller following a paraplegic heiress who must confront her stepfather and other predatory men to safeguard her fortune. As tension and paranoia build in the haunted mansion, murder seems inevitable. Reminiscent of Luchino Visconti’s work in its refined rendering of aristocratic decadence, Aslani’s feature, banned after one screening and lost for decades, evokes the political and moral deterioration of Iran before the 1979 Revolution, foreseeing the societal disintegration to come.
