The economic downturn that has ravaged the United States has impacted no region more than the rural epic sprawl of Kentucky. There, in the Appalachians, a timeless way of life is quickly being driven to extinction. In their first feature collaboration, the French directing duo Bouzgarrou and Jenkoe look not to carve a traditional narrative from their findings, but rather to bear witness to a disappearing culture, where the locals wear the derogatory label of “hillbilly” as a badge of honour that imbues their identity with an affirming, vulnerable poetry.
