While searching for a beach house for summer vacation, Suzanna Andler gets lost in the melancholy of a Riviera villa. In a break from her bored Parisian life, she ponders her unfaithful husband, who is only a voice on the other end of the line, and her young lover, who tortures himself over their relationship. Superbly performed by Charlotte Gainsbourg in intimate dramaturgy, Jacquot’s lyrical adaptation of the eponymous Marguerite Duras play offers a moving portrait of a woman in search of impossible emancipation.
